Aims
Our ethos is inclusive and we work hard with families and outside agencies to ensure the best possible educational outcomes for all of our children irrespective of their level of need. Our aims are:
- To identify children with SEND as early as possible and to ensure their needs are met.
- To provide an environment where barriers to learning and participation are reduced to a minimum, therefore encouraging children to feel confident, respected and able to succeed.
- To provide all our children with a broad, balanced and stimulating curriculum that is differentiated to the needs and abilities of the individual.
- To be sympathetic to each child's need by providing a strong partnership between children, parents/careers, school and outside agencies.
- To ensure all pupils take a full and active part in school life.
Categories of SEND
Children's SEND are generally thought of in the following main areas:
- cognition and learning - this includes children who have moderate or specific learning difficulties, such as dyslexia and dyspraxia.
- communication and interaction - this includes children with speech and language delay and those with difficulties in social communication.
- social, emotional and mental health - this includes children who may be withdrawn or isolated, disruptive, hyperactive or who lack concentration.
- physical or sensory issues - this includes children with impairments including hearing or visual difficulties, or other physical difficulties.
Our ‘Local Offer’
The SEND reforms place a statutory requirement on schools from September 2014 to make information available to young people and parents about how the school supports children and young people with SEND. This information forms the basis for the school's Local Offer.

Salford’s ‘Local Offer’
If you have children with special educational needs and/or disabilities click on the link at the side of this page where you will find a huge range of information on things like health services, things to do, support and advice, travel and transport, getting involved and having your say and much more. Every council in the UK has a Local Offer to help you take more control over how your child’s needs are met, keep you informed and help you make the most of services and support in your area.
SEND Complaints Procedure
At Summerville Primary School we operate an 'open door' policy. Parents and carers are encouraged to speak with the class teacher about any concerns they may have. They will be able to discuss additional support children are receiving.
If you wish to discuss your child's needs further contact the headteacher or SENDCo who will be able to talk about how Summerville can support children with SEND. The school's complaints policy is on our school website's Policies page, This includes complaints around SEND and Looked After Children. The policy can also be obtained through request of a paper copy from the school office. Please follow this policy if you would like to make a formal complaint. In the first instance discussions would be encouraged by the class teacher, SENDCo and headteacher to try and resolve any issues.
